Ms. Graffunder studied radiation protection in Karlsruhe and joined the Karlsruhe Research Centre GmbH in 1989, where she gained her first experiences in administrative health physics in the Central Safety Department. She then worked in the Central Waste Facilities Department as head of the Coordination Staff Unit in charge of sales, product coordination, interim storage facilities, waste documentations and the collecting facility for radioactive waste of the federal state Baden-Württemberg. Afterwards, she was responsible for the decommissioning of the sodium-cooled fast reactor (KNK), especially for the planning and execution of the dismantling of the highly-activated fast-breeder reactor tank. In 2006 Ms. Graffunder joined the WAK Dismantling and Disposal GmbH and was responsible for the dismantling of highly-activated areas (HWL, LAVA, and VEK).
In 2009 she changed to the Energiewerke Nord GmbH (EWN), became authorized representative and is responsible for the establishment of the KONRAD coordinating agency for the public sector. Since 2001 she also leads the Nuclear Fuel Disposal project from the former Karlsruhe Research Centre.
Ms. Graffunder is member of several committees, such as speaker of the Board of the KTG section „Decommissioning and Disposal of Radioactive Waste“ as well as member of the ESK committee „Waste Conditioning, Transport and Interim Storage“.
