LEARNING OBJECTIVES

In this module you will learn the principles of reactor safety and radiation protection. The instructors will present the current state of science and technology, also pertinent safety concepts with reference to real-life examples. You will learn about the innovative fourth generation reactor concepts and discuss their advantages and drawbacks. Besides the basic rules of radiation protection, you will be instructed in how to work with radioactive substances and the ionising radiation that is emitted by these substances. The effects of reactor incidents and the INES scale also constitute an important component of the module. In addition, important topics such as the dismantling of nuclear facilities and waste management in nuclear power stations will be discussed. At the end of this seminar you will learn about the specific applications of nuclear engineering in medicine and the latest developments in this field.
