MODULE A - NUCLEAR SAFETY & TECHNOLOGY

This module focuses on the principles of reactor safety and radiation protection. This includes, amongst other topics, the handling of radioactive material and ionised radiation. Graded safety measures, the impact of reactor accidents and the INES scale will be discussed.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

In this module, a general overview of the main technical and scientific principles of nuclear engineering will be provided, including a brief introduction to the historical development of the discipline. The lecturers will explain the nuclear physics phenomena that take place in a reactor (e.g., moderation, diffusion and transport of neutrons), and in this context they will discuss in detail the entire nuclear fuel cycle aspects, from uranium mining to disposal of radioactive waste (without neglecting fabrication and enrichment issues); an overview of present an future fuel resources aspects will be addressed as well. Economic aspects concerning nuclear power generation and a short overview of a modern web-based simulation and visualization tool will be included. Besides the basic principles of radiation uses and protection (both in the environmental, medical and industrial field), an overview about working procedures adopted with radioactive substances and the ionising radiations fields associated to them will be provided. The effects of reactor incidents and the INES scale also constitute an important component of the module; in addition, important topics such as the dismantling of nuclear facilities and waste management and disposal will be discussed. A dedicated module moreover will be focused on fundamentals of nuclear measurement and detection technology, in the frame of which the attendee will be introduced to the legal aspects concerning nuclear supervisory and approval procedures.
